Melissa Jane Ariffin Resume

My name is Melissa-Jane Ariffin. I'll be 22 years old this coming July 14th 2012.

My interest in singing began when I was 9 years old and studying in Brunei Darussalam. I joined my first singing competition held by St. George's School, Bandar Seri Begawan where I won singing the song Reflections by Christina Aguilera. Since then I was constantly invited by the school to sing the Brunei National Anthem at its Monday assemblies.

When I returned to Malaysia in 2005 and entered Form 3 at SMK Sri Sentosa, Jalan Kuchai Lama, I entered the Sentosa Idol competition held by the school at the time. I won 1st place in Solo Category singing the song Looking Through Your Eyes by Leanne Rymes. I remember looking at the score sheet after the prize giving and noticed that my marks were way ahead of even the 2nd and 3rd place winners.

My voice is suited for acoustic-type songs and not so much R&B or HipHop. Furthermore, I like the clean, laidback, acoustic sounds of the guitar especially when it has a country lilt to it. I listen to all types of music. I am not particularly fond of big, loud, rhythm-heavy genres although some of these songs are great for dancing. I am able to ad lib, emote, put my own ‘feel' into a song and do backing vocals. I can also sing comfortably in Malay as well as English.

In Sri Sentosa, again, especially after winning Sentosa Idol, I was asked to sing Sejahtera Malaysia on National Day and during Monday assemblies. It was also during this time that I was asked to help train the school choir to sing a goodbye song for our principal as she was leaving. I helped coach the 20-strong school choir and taught them harmony, with me taking the lead for my father's song entitled You Are which he had composed for a Bruneian artiste.

In 2008, my father was asked to contribute a charity song towards animal welfare in Turkey. That was when he wrote Stop for World Animal Day and it was to be my first foray in a professional recording studio. Thereafter, I also lent the backing vocals to his ASEAN Song Writing Competition song entitled One.
