Practicing an instrument posted by Last Minute Musicians

It's easy to spend time practicing an instrument, however spending quality time practicing an instrument is different to just playing the same old things over and over again.
Just wondering if anyone has any tips on practicing effectively?
Great advice on your blog. I'd only add that regardless of how pressed for time one has in their day/night that it's far easier to follow through with their commitment to a regular practicing schedule if they completely disconnect from the outside world.
Re: turn off all non-essential electronic devices like your smartphone, computer, TV, radio, etc. as the more potential distractions available, the more likely one can become sidetracked and lose focus on the task at hand.
As a society we've become too accustomed to being electronically connected 24/7, it's akin to an addiction that's difficult for some to break. And if you truly believe music is your calling, then you already know where your priorities lie.
Also, if you're living with anyone else in the same home, put a Do Not Disturb sign on your door and lock it until you're ready to return to the 'outside' world again.
And remember, there's a reason why we say we play music, we never work music...so love what you're doing and those practicing hours will fly by faster than you'll realize.
Keep up the good work,
Thanks so much for your reply! There are so many distractions nowadays - it's a miracle anyone manages to do anything.
