Gustavo Dudamel and Yefim Bronfman

Thur, Oct 13, 8:00pm, Fri, Oct 14, 8:00pm, and Sat, Oct 15, 8:00pm at Walt Disney Concert Hall

Artists:

Los Angeles Philharmonic

Gustavo Dudamel, conductor

Yefim Bronfman, piano

Program:

Vivier: Orion

Bartók: Piano Concerto No. 3

Tchaikovsky: Symphony No. 5

Orion for orchestra is one of the pieces that the short-lived Claude Vivier (he was murdered at 34)

completed after visiting Bali where he re-evaluated the role of the artist in society.  Composed for

Bartók’s wife, the Third Piano Concerto was left unfinished at his death. Drawing from the composer’s

notes, his friend Tibor Serly, Eugene Ormandy, and a few others orchestrated the final 17 bars.

Yefim Bronfman, who won a Grammy (with the LA Phil) for his recording of Bartók’s three piano

concertos, plays this light, airy, almost neoclassical work.

Tchaikovsky’s passionate Fifth Symphony mirrors Beethoven’s Fifth in its trajectory from tragedy to triumph.
