Ron Sandrin Resume
| Born in Northern Ontario Canada I studied violin at the University of Toronto and the Accademia Musicale Chigiana in Siena. After playing shortly with the Royal Winnipeg Ballet I moved to the Netherlands in 1977 where I continued my career. In 1998 I was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease and the following year marked the end of my professional career as a violinist.
At first I was relieved that I finally knew what the problem was. Going to work every day and hoping I would be able to ‘keep up’ with my colleagues in the first violins had kept me awake nights for the four previous years. I had tried every possible therapy to compensate the deteriorating loss of bow control. As fellow musicians we are all aware of how vulnerable one is in this competitive world we live in. Still there isn’t a profession on earth that can replace the exhilarating feeling music gives us. Even though it’s on another level, I still pick up the violin regularly and experiment with new techniques, trying to regain some of the lost motor skills. Some days it feels like I’m holding a nice piece of firewood in my hands. Luckily we don’t have a fireplace… But then there are days when it seems to come together and those moments make all my efforts worth while. I’m very interested in your stories as they encourage me to continue my own work. They also increase my knowledge and understanding of the dilemmas fellow musicians face in similar situations. Acknowledging the problem is a huge step. Sometimes there is a solution within your reach. | ||
