John Devitt Creative Page

Irish born flautist presently living and working in the Netherlands.
Studied flute with Prof. Doris Keogh at The Royal Irish Academy of Music in Dublin, and later continued my studies of flute and improvisation with Dick Gout, Ferdinand Povel, Herb Geller and Dick de Graaf at the Rotterdam Conservatory.
I've played with various jazz and jazz-rock groups as well as playing tenor sax in a rock band for a while; in two flute quartets (mostly classical repertoire) and in the Blauwdruk Ensemble which was formed to perform the works of contemporary Dutch composer Nico Huijbregts.

At present, besides teaching flute, I'm experimenting with creating frameworks for improvisation using computer based programs and sound loops and recording these pieces at my  own Overloop Studio in Nijmegen .

I'm fortunate to have been selected to participate "virtually" in the multimedia performances of Christopher Hedge and the Magnetic Poets at the Piazza Solferino during the 2006 Winter Olympics in Torino with a piece on alto flute entitled: "Orphans We"  The piece opens citing the Negro spiritual classic "Sometimes I Feel Like a Motherless Child".

In the depths of this feeling of utter aloneness which is known to all of us we may indeed discover that we are al(l)-one.
The theme of the project was: "One Heart, One Beat, 7 Billion Voices"

My latest album is "Afar", which is now available through iTunes etc.:
