Mark Keane Resume

Born in London to Irish parents, I was brought up in Galway, Ireland.

I was classically trained as a vocalist by organist/choirmaster Mark Keane of the Claddagh, Galway, and performed and competed as a member of and soloist for the Galway Boy Singers. I also studied with Peter Sweeney and Ita O'Donovan, performing as boy soprano soloist for the Irish Boys Choir in the National Concert Hall in Dublin on 3 occasions.

Although exposed to traditional Irish instruments and the classical flute from a young age, I was a latecomer to the bass, taking the instrument up at 17 - midway through my first year in University.

Began gigging with up-and-coming Galway pop covers band Tryst, eventually playing in the biggest club venues in the city.

Gigging regularly and singing lead for some tunes in Tryst, who were now playing at weddings, balls and gala events, I joined Cormac Dunne of The Stunning in the rock covers band The Sunseekers. Played Electric Bass in the AIMS award-winning NUI Galway musical society production of "Back the 80's". Member of the Avant-garde/Electronic project "The Drunk Chef Collective" and an acoustic Guitar/Bass/Vocals/Percussion duo with Rory Kelly.

Played in NUIG musical society's funky 70's themed musical "Disco Inferno" and played Double Bass in the Galway Youth Jazz Orchestra under the direction of John Fleming and Bertrand Huvé. Made it to final round of Coyote Factor 2009 Singing Competition, singing Soul, R'n'B and Reggae.

In March, I travelled to New York City to study at the Collective during which time I played in the premiere of Mike Kovacs' Rock Opera, "After the Valentines" and subbed in David Sandoval's Cuban-inspired funk band, Delexilio.

Studied technique and theory for bass and guitar with Galway-based guitar virtuoso Declan Collins.

Studied funk, rock, jazz and groove with Italian bassist and Bass Collective NYC alumnus Francesco Olivieri.

Graduated from the Certificate Program at the Bass Collective, New York City

Here I undertook an intensive course of study incorporating theory, reading, recording, and style performance (performing weekly with NYC professionals in Jazz, Funk, Afro-Cuban, Brazilian, Caribbean, Afro-Pop, Rock, Electronic, Gospel, Hip Hop styles) studying with some of the best musicians on the New York and global music circuit, including Lincoln Goines, Leo Traversa, Irio O'Farrill, John Davis, Hilliard Greene, Steve Count, Frank Gravis, Pete Retzlaff, Memo Acevedo, Adriano Santos, Vince Cherico and Jason Gianni, giving special attention to Jazz Harmony with Fernando Hernandez and to Double Bass with Joe Fitzgerald. Also studied traditional Irish Sean-Nós singing with Sandra Reid.

Took part in the weekly Latin and Advanced Jazz SOJ Workshops at the Collective with Bob Quaranta and Fernando Hernandez respectively. Attended masterclasses with Mike Clark, Pedro Martinez, Mark Giuliana and Pete Retzlaff.

I also hold a B.Sc. in Physics with Astrophysics from NUI Galway.
