| Sendai is a quintet formed by Mila Dores on voice, Seth Bennett on double bass, Craig Scott on guitars, Joost Hendrickx on drums and Upneet Singh on tabla.
Their music is the product of various influences such as Jazz, Hindustani music, Fado and experimental composition techniques. The group draw influences from each member's own musical heritage and share them openly creating a unique blend of sounds and a great performance vibe.
Mila Dores (Portugal) was recently named one of three successful applicants for the Jazz Yorkshire Futures Scheme, which is a project aimed at giving talented young musicians (and their ensembles) opportunities to develop musically and to share their music with as many people as possible. Mila graduated from Leeds College of Music earlier this year and is still a very active member of the musical community in Leeds, collabortating with collectives and organisations such as LIMA, Yorkshire Dance and a number of musicians both across the UK and in Portugal. Here she collaborates with four Leeds based musicians to form Sendai. Collectively the members of the band have performed with artists such as Jean Toussaint (Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers), Matthew Bourne (Perrier Jazz musician of the year 2001), Tom Arthurs (F-ire Collective), Christophe De Bezenac and Chris Sharkey (Trio VD, Mojo magazine's number 1 jazz album of 2009), Courtney Pine, Omar Puente and Pandit Kaushiki Chakrabati.
Seth Bennett is a member of Award-winning band I.D.S.T and Joost Hendrickx is a member of Dave Kane's Rabbit Project (Mojo magazine's number 8 jazz album of 2009).
Craig Scott is a founder member of 'Omnivore' – Leeds based punk-improv band featured in Jazzwise and The Guardian. Upneet Singh has been studying tabla since the age of two with his father, Pandit Dharambir Singh and has been perfecting the 'Warrior' style of Tabla playing, which he now teaches at SAA UK – one of the biggest centres for Indian Music in the country.
