This is my first draft of the Kyrie eleison movement of a Mass setting I'm writing for the Middleton Civic Association's Concert on June 2nd 2012 celebrating the 600th anniversary of the re-ordering of Middleton Parish Church by Cardinal Langley in 1415. He dedicated it to St. Leonard, then one of the most popularly venerated saints, whose credentials included miracles of healing and freedom of prisoners. The music is scored for SSAATTBB and organ with Baritone soloist, whose texts include verses from the Psalms in Latin. In the Kyrie I am seeking to set the atmosphere of mystical prayerfulness out of which will emerge effective spiritual powers of help and healing. I think you can distinguish the liturgical and biblical texts: 3-fold kyries for the Choir interspersed with plainchant-like verses intoned by the soloist.
