Glasgow Kiss Resume

We are John Gray and Alastair McColl. We have over 28 years musical experience playing bagpipes and other instruments (saxes, whistles, bass, guitar, percussion). Our unique set of skills and experience have been acquired through competing and performing music internationally at the highest level.

Born in Tauranga, New Zealand John has been studying and playing music since 8 years of age when he first picked up a violin. He then went on to learn the Bagpipes when he was 11 years of age and has been playing them now for over 40 years.

John ensured that his tertiary education was obtained in the same City as the then NZ Champion Pipe Band the City of Wellington Pipe Band which he joined in 1980. That Band has been officially recognized as one of the world's most successful bands and has been listed in the Guinness Book of Records. The Band had won the NZ Grade 1 Championship a record 26 times – 7 times in succession and has been runner up over 12 times. The Band has also played at the Edinburgh Military Tattoo many times and at the L'Orient Celtic Music festival in France.

John was Pipe Sgt of the City of Wellington Pipe Band and was involved in orchestrating many concerts put on by the Band which featured traditional Scottish music and more ‘avante garde' music involving traditional Scottish instruments and other more modern instruments such as guitars, keyboards and brass.

In between ‘bagpiping' all over the world John took time out to take up the saxophone and study Jazz Performance at Massey University playing tenor, alto and soprano saxophones. Latterly, he has been playing whistles and has performed with local Celtic Groups “The Moas” and “Las Gaitas de Celtique”.
